They've gotten several times smaller than they used to be. The first cell phones were attached to a briefcase that housed all the necessary electronics. Now it's possible to make cell phones that are far smaller than anyone would care to use.

Cell phones used to be only phones. Now they also function as calendars, calculators, cameras, web browsers, and everything else under the sun.

They've also become much sleeker. Back when cell phones were still a novelty, people never used to care what they looked like as long as they worked. Now, a phone's appearance seems to matter just as much as its functionality.

Like all consumer electronics, they also continue to get cheaper as their technologies becomes more commonplace. The first cell phones used to cost thousands of dollars and, by and large, were only bought by business professionals. How has cell phones changed since they first cam out till now?
Cellular Telephones were originally introduced during the 1980s when the advances in microprocessors allowed for the reduction in size with the processing power required to operate the device. Batteries were %26quot;bricks%26quot; the size of a loaf of bread or even the size of a car battery and often were located in the trunk area.

The radios used analog technology, had a very limited distance from a tower (1-3 miles or mostly less). Talk time was rated at less than an hour. Dropped calls and static were major disadvantages as well as cost.

Today's cellular phones are as powerful as computers of the late 1990s. They include removable mass storage (SD cards), include many applications such as a phone book, and list of placed and accepted calls, Caller ID, and often can access the Internet, listen to digital music and video, as well as send/receive short text messages, pictures, or even videos all taken from built-in mega-pixel cameras. The size of the devices can be smaller than you hand and the batteries integrated and very lightweight.

Radios are now digital and GPS chips include the ability to navigate and send 911 centers a callers exact location.

Reception is good and nation-wide and Internation coverage is very good in most developed areas. Dropped calls are rare and the distance one can be from a %26quot;tower%26quot; can be up to 30 miles. Battery life is measured in up to weeks in stand-by and several hours of talk-time.

While the cell phones of the 1980s were independent devices, modern phones can connect to WiFi computer networks, communicate with a laptop or desktop computer, and even %26quot;pair%26quot; with many various machines and devices including wireless integration with vehicle computer systems for hands-free communication.

One interesting point is that the number of auto accidents has jumped in the last 10 years - mainly due to use of a cell phone, texting, etc. while driving. Further, due to the use of speed-dials and built-in phone books/contact lists, people have lost the ability to memorize the actual phone numbers of their friends, family, and even work. How has cell phones changed since they first cam out till now?
Well, they've become a lot smaller. Then they started getting all sorts of gadgets. Phonebooks and clocks on them, games (such as Snake), color screens, cameras, internet. They call just as well as the old ones, though.
